How Cars Have Actually Gotten More Dangerous

Dangers of New Cars

The vehicles on the road today should, in theory, be the safest vehicles ever manufactured. They’re jam-packed with more safety features than we could possibly list here—and automakers continue to find new ways to put even more safety features into their vehicles every single year. Yet, despite this, you could argue that vehicles are actually getting more dangerous as a whole. Here are some ways your vehicle might be putting you in harm’s way.

Vehicles today have too many distractions inside of them

Even if you’re diligent about not using your cell phone when you’re behind the wheel of your car, there are still so many other distractions that can take your eyes off the road. Most of today’s vehicles come with touchscreens inside of them that are designed to do everything from play the radio to provide you with directions. While these screens can come in handy, they can also distract you and make it more likely that you’ll be involved in an accident at some point.

They also have heavy tints on their windows

Most of the vehicles that were produced just a decade or two ago didn’t have any tint on their windows. These days, it feels like almost every car, truck, and SUV comes with at least some privacy glass installed in it. This glass is designed to protect people from the sun’s harmful UV rays while also making vehicles more private. But unfortunately, tinted windows can limit visibility in a vehicle and make it hard for some drivers to see where they’re going. This is obviously not a good thing and can put drivers and pedestrians in danger.

They’re a lot heavier now than they used to be

If you drive around in a heavy car, truck, or SUV, you might like the protection that it provides for you. But if you’re ever hit by one, you’ll feel differently. Studies have shown that you’re more likely to be injured or killed in a crash involving a heavier vehicle. Most of the vehicles out there today are a lot heavier than they used to be. Even something as simple as a Honda Accord weighs about 1,500 pounds more in 2018 than it did just 40 years ago. All of that extra weight can make for dangerous situations out on the road.
